Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has been cleared of any misconduct following the release of a video in August that showed her partying with friends. The 36-year-old leader defended herself after footage of her dancing with friends and celebrities was leaked online.
The video sparked dozens of complaints, with some claiming that Marin’s behavior had damaged Finland’s “reputation and security.” However, after an official inquiry, Chancellor of Justice Tuomas Poysti concluded that there was no evidence suggesting that Marin had neglected her duties as prime minister.
Poysti emphasized that there was “no reason to suspect the prime minister of unlawful conduct in the performance of her duties or of neglecting her official responsibilities.” Marin also took a drug test to dispel rumors, following suggestions that comments in the video might have referenced narcotics. The test came back negative.
At the time the video was filmed, Marin explained that it was recorded in a private setting, where she had spent the evening with friends. Responding to the controversy, she told reporters, “I am human. And I too sometimes long for joy, light, and fun amidst these dark clouds.”
The incident sparked a wave of support for Marin, particularly from women in Finland, who took to social media to post videos of themselves dancing in solidarity. Marin also received public support from former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who encouraged her to “keep dancing.”
Sanna Marin became the world’s youngest sitting prime minister in 2019 at the age of 34. A left-wing politician, she is a strong advocate for Finland’s welfare system. Her tenure has been shaped by significant events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During her time in office, she led Finland’s application to join NATO, a decision driven by growing public support in response to Russia’s actions.
Prime Minister Marin is expected to join other world leaders at the upcoming COP27 climate summit in Egypt.
