Fourteen days have passed since the tragic incident that shattered the hearts of many. On October 29, 2016, Javier Canchi Choque, a 17-year-old student, endured an unimaginable horror. Tied up, forced to drink gasoline, and set on fire by three gang members—allegedly at the behest of his former girlfriend, a fifteen-year-old girl named Delia—Javier’s ordeal revealed the depths of cruelty that gangs can reach.
Who is Javier Canchi?
Javier, a fourth-year secondary school student at Antonio Díez School, was known for his fun-loving and witty nature. Ironically, he was rehearsing a play in which his character dies in the final act. Five days before his death, he posted a haunting image on Facebook: a tombstone with flowers and the words, “When I leave in your memory, take me with you. When I walk away in your memory, take me forever.” He dedicated these words to Marleni Tola Panta, a girl he was dating. Delia, Marleni’s cousin, and Javier’s ex-girlfriend, reacted strangely to this post, hinting at her possible motive for revenge.
According to police, Delia’s jealousy and anger over Javier dating her cousin may have driven her to plan this horrendous act. Delia had previously threatened Javier, but her threats were dismissed as mere tantrums. On October 29, Delia and Javier met in a field in Sivingani, where Delia supposedly asked Javier to delete some audio. Shortly after, Delia’s new boyfriend, Guery VR, and his friends René MH and Gustavo CV attacked Javier. They forced him to drink gasoline and set him on fire.
A neighbor, who heard Javier’s desperate screams, rushed to the scene and recorded Javier’s final words on his cell phone. Javier identified René, Delia, and her friends as his attackers. Despite the efforts of neighbors to help, Javier succumbed to his injuries the next day, suffering from third-degree burns and multiple organ failure. Before he died, Javier repeated to his family that Delia and her friends were responsible for his suffering.
