Videos circulating on social media platforms and YouTube depict a violent knife attack that occurred on Friday afternoon at Mannheim’s market square. In the footage, a man is seen indiscriminately stabbing bystanders.
Seven people were injured in the knife attack, which took place around half past eleven in the morning, including a police officer. The situation escalated to the point where firearms had to be used against the attacker, resulting in injuries to the assailant as well, according to a press release from the Mannheim police.

Most of the circulating videos are short, ranging from 30 to 60 seconds in length. Many details about the incident remain unclear, such as the severity of injuries sustained by both the suspect and the victims, and whether the attacker was known to the police. Videos are being shared on various platforms, including YouTube, showing the knife attack, including a notable incident involving Islam critic Michael Stürzenberger.

The videos typically start with a view of a white van and then pan to a group of people. Posters on the ground with the word “Islamist” can be seen in the background. According to a report by “SWR,” the attack occurred near an information stand of “Pax Europa,” a right-wing association based in Krefeld known for its criticism of Islam.
In one longer YouTube video, the attacker is seen loitering in Mannheim’s market square before the attack. The footage then shows a scuffle and shouts, with a man in a dark jacket and green shirt, surrounded by three others in blue tops, struggling on the ground. It becomes apparent that the man is wielding a knife. He has a full beard and wears glasses.
The man repeatedly strikes at his victim’s face with the knife, amidst constant shouting. When the camera pans away, a victim with a bleeding leg wound is visible.
As the attacker lies on the ground, two men attempt to disarm him. The scene becomes chaotic, with other people getting involved, and mostly shoes are visible in the frame.
At one point, a police officer appears to mistake one of the men who subdued the attacker for the assailant. The attacker manages to get up and stab the police officer in the neck, prompting another officer to shoot him.
Shouts of “Put the knife away! I want to see your hands!” are heard. The man in the blue jacket, who is on the ground, throws the knife aside. Several police officers with firearms are visible in the footage before it ends. The longer YouTube video also captures the moments following the attack, including the treatment of the injured and reactions from bystanders.
Gundram Lottmann, chairman of the police union in Baden-Württemberg, expressed shock following the Mannheim attack. He noted that the police have faced similar terror scenarios in recent years, especially concerning attacks on politicians during rallies. Lottmann emphasized the challenge of protecting every event due to insufficient staffing.
Mannheim, with its high migration density, has been a focal point for such incidents, leading to several instances where police have had to use firearms. Despite these challenges, Lottmann pointed out persistent complaints from certain left-wing groups about perceived police violence.
In a recent incident, a colleague was acquitted by a regional court, and in another case, the public prosecutor’s office dropped charges. Lottmann underscored the importance of video evidence from the latest attack, indicating that the use of firearms against the knife attacker was justified.
